Capillary blood collection: This is how it works

We understand that at first it might sound a bit intimidating to draw your own blood sample. But don’t worry: first, only a few drops of blood from your fingertip are needed. Secondly, we can promise you that with the kiweno test kit and the included instructions, you have all the information you need for a safe sample collection!

Step by step guide

The most important steps from the supplied instructions are summarized again here.

IMPORTANT: In order to be able to guarantee a valid test evaluation, please make sure to follow the individual steps of the instructions for use supplied in the test kit exactly!

Step 1

Read the accompanying booklet with instructions carefully before taking the blood sample. Before starting the test, do not forget to register on my.kiweno.
Note: Only by registering on my.kiweno will you have access to your test results.

Step 2

Place all the utensils contained in the transparent plastic bag on an absorbent, clean surface (e.g. handkerchief or kitchen roll).

Open the blood collection tube and place it in front of you. Also have the unpacked dry swab ready.

Step 3

Wash your hands and then hold them under warm water for at least 2-3 minutes. For optimal blood flow and smooth testing, your fingers must be warm.

Step 4

Take the alcohol swab from the packaging and use it to disinfect the fingertip that you have selected for removal. Then allow the fingertip to dry completely.

Important: Please do not touch anything with your finger after disinfection and do not blow on it to avoid contamination.

Step 5

Pull the protective cover of the lancet off with a rotating movement around its own axis. Caution: The lancet is a disposable lancet and can only be released once.

Step 6

Place the hand on a stable surface with the back of the hand facing down. Place the lancet firmly on the front, lateral area of the fingertip. Then press firmly on the trigger with a free finger. You will feel a short prick.

Step 7

Now massage the finger vigorously from the palm to the fingertip until a large drop of blood has formed and gently wipe it off with the enclosed dry swab. Only the second drop should go into the blood collection tube.

Important: Avoid squeezing or pressing the fingertip too tightly, otherwise tissue fluid could enter the tube.

Step 8

Now hold your finger against the open blood collection tube and wipe the drop of blood off the edge of the tube so that it can flow in.

Step 9

Fill the tube with blood up to the mark. Then close the blood collection tube by pressing on the cap firmly.

Important: The tube must be filled with blood up to the mark. Too small a quantity of blood cannot be evaluated!

Step 10

Stop your bleeding by pressing on the dry swab and sticking a band-aid on your finger.

Step 11

Prepare your sample for shipment: Roll the tube back and forth several times on a table surface so that the anticoagulant on the inside of the tube mixes with your blood. This will preserve the sample optimally.

Step 12

Now label the two enclosed identification labels. Stick one on the smaller blood collection tube and one on the transport tube.

Step 13

Place the blood collection tube in the larger transport tube and carefully close it. Put it into the gray return envelope.

Step 14

Place the return envelope on a flat surface, peel off the adhesive strip and close it carefully without creasing. Please label the envelope and bring it immediately to the nearest post office. Once we have received the blood sample, you will receive a notification via SMS.

Step 15

After a few days, you will receive your individual test results and further information in the previously created my.kiweno profile. We will notify you by e-mail as soon as your results are online.
